Description
THAI PAVILION
The pavilion, or sala, is a shelter from rain and heat. This pavilion resembles the ones that would be on a palace ground or a temple, not those that would be along the roadsides in Thailand. The Thai Pavilion in Olbrich Gardens was a gift to the UW- Madison from the Thai Government and the Thai Chapter of Wisconsin Alumni Association. The pavilion was built in Thailand and then was disassembled for shipment. It traveled by sea, rail and truck and took about 2 months to arrive to Madison where it was reassembled by nine Thai artisans, another three week process. The pavilion has no nails or screws and is made of teak and weather-resistant ceramic roof tiles. Made to withstand the cold Wisconsin winters. Even though rescenlant to winter, it is fragile. The gold leaf that covers the pavilion is very sensitive to human oils. ADMIRE, BUT DO NOT TOUCH. The pavilion was approved by the Thai Royal family and bears the seal of the Thai Crown. It is one of only four outside of Thailand. More information about the pavilion and Thai gardens can be read on Olbrich Garden's website http://www.olbrich.org/gardens/thai.cfm
