Description
The statue the sits atop the Wisconsin State Capitol bears the name of the state Wisconsin, often though misidentified as Miss Forward. It is 23 caret gold-gilded bronze, hence the name the Golden Lady and is by Daniel Chester French. 1914. The statue is 15'5" tall and weighs over three tons. It sits just under 270 feet above the ground. It is a symbol of our state motto Forward. Her right arm outstretched signifies "forward", she wears a helmet with a badger on it, her left hand holds the globe with an eagle on it, and on the eagles chest is a W. The cost of the statue was $20,325.
Daniel Chester French is a famous sculptor from the late 19th/early 20th Century. Many of his works are in Massachusetts and New York, his home states. Probably his most famous piece is Abe Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Another piece of his works, that many of us will know is George Washington Equestrian Statue located in Paris, France.
(Until researching information about the statue, I was one with the wrong name for it as I thought her name was Forward)
