Picture of the "End of the Trail" Statue in Waupun, Wisconsin, a sculpture by James Earle Fraser (1876-1953). This is the bronze statue that is located in Shaler Park next to the Rock River. The original sculpture was done when he was seventeen years old. He then sculpted it, larger than life size for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco. It was at that time it gain world popularity. In 1975 it became an official landmark in the state of Wisconsin and Is also on the National Register of Historic Sites. The statue also serves as the official seal for Waupun. James Earle Fraser was a famous sculptor in America's history. He was known for his works depicting the westward expansion and the plight of the Native Americans as their homes and lands were taken in the 18th and 19th century. Other famous pieces of work by him are the designs of the Indian Head "Buffalo" Nickel, the WWI Victory Medal and the Navy Cross. Fraser never copyrighted "The End of the Trail" and commented that many others had probably profited more than he ever had. The Indian that modeled for him was Chief John Big Tree, an honored guest at Waupun's 125th Jubilee celebration in 1964.
